Last month I resolved to walk every day for the entire month of January.
That went really well for about 13 days.
In fact, I’d say that it was going fabulously right up until the point that Becky showed up at my door and I decided exercise of any form was completely too much of a pain in the ass. Of course, that’s not to say I’m blaming Becky for my failure to stick with my goals. I mean, sure, the timing is convenient and one could easily make the connection between her presence and my lack of fitness.
But let’s not point fingers.
The point is, January is over and I have not made any real progress towards creating a new habit this year.
My first thought was to move on to something else. Something easier, maybe. Or something more fun – like promising to make someone else do dishes for the entire month of February. (You know, to teach myself how to delegate!)
But that’s not really the point.
The point, the overall goal, of my “take one thing at a time” plan wasn’t to give myself a pile of half assed attempts at change. The idea was to take it all one bite at a time, rather than overwhelm myself with a million good ideas that never amount to much of anything.
(Note to self: I maybe should have applied this philosophy to my sudden need to redecorate/finish decorating my entire house. All at once. Maybe then I wouldn’t have orphan pieces of furniture in corners, books stacked on tables, and an all out clusterfuck going on in my home right about now.
For future reference? Noted.
ANway – I’m not ready to quit this idea just yet. I still want to get healthier. And, yeah, I’m shushing really hard at the other “things I want to take on” that are clamoring for attention in the back of my mind. But I said my health was important to me, I said I wanted to get in shape, and that hasn’t changed.
So I didn’t cement a new habit of getting moving in January. I tried. And now I’m going to build on that by taking the next step.
I’m going to keep trying.
Since last month’s resolution was declared, I have gained a Wii Fit and enough space to use my treadmill. Therefore, I’m going to adjust my goal a little bit – hopefully giving myself some more flexibility and a better chance of actually succeeding this time around.
February’s official New Year’s Resolution Of The Month is:
I will exercise – in some way, shape or form – for 30 minutes every day.
Including weekends and Valentine’s Day and the days that my brother-in-law is in town.
So. There. It is written or some shit. La Fin.
